Stress is a major cause in obesity and several health related issues. For instance, stress releases a hormone called cortisol which tends to collect around our belly area. Stress is also linked to several physical and mental diseases that can affect anything from your heart to your hormones.
That’s why it’s imperative that we learn how to relieve stress so that we can show up for our healthiest lives. Below you’ll find some ways to relieve stress.
Meditation and Breath Work
Taking some time to yourself each day to regroup and recharge will work wonders in your stress levels. Whenever you feel upset or irritated feel free to take a breather right then and there. Or, you can set aside some time each day to sit in stillness and breathe.
Also note that breathing improperly can actually send stress signals to the brain. When breathing in make sure your belly is extending outward. When exhale contract your belly.
There are several amazing meditation teachers with guided meditations to get you started including, Gabrielle Bernstein, Deepak Chopra, and Meditation Oasis.
Exercise kills two birds with one stone. Not only are you working your muscles to shed pounds, you’re also moving oxygen through the body. Moving around all the pent up energy we carry from our busy lives can significantly help us reduce our stress levels.
Give Up Stimulants
Some people can have caffeine or sugar with no issues at all, however for several people out there stimulants can make their stress levels much worse. Caffeine in particular gives us a high and then causes us to crash.
If you feel like you are sensitive to stimulants such as caffeine you should probably give them up in order to help with your stress levels.
By making some very simple changes you can start relieving your stress levels safely and naturally. Reducing stress will help you build the foundation upon which all your other health related resolutions will succeed.
